A business credit card is usually offered to corporate representatives and business owners so that they may keep their business expenses separate from their personal expenses more easily, the idea is to maintain a separate line of credit for the business entity, so that the business is not affected with problems of low personal credit and vice-versa. Business credit cards may or may not come with a rewards scheme depending on which card you get and from which creditor

In most cases, creditors require the consumers to have an excellent credit score before providing them with a business credit card. It's easiest to get a business credit card from your current credit company, with which you already have a personal credit account. There are a few things that must factor into your decision of getting a business credit card, like the applicable annual fees, interest rates and rewards. Always try to look for credit cards that are capped with respect to interest rates, the last thing that you want is to watch that number grow steadily until it reaches unimaginable levels like 60%. When it comes to reward, see if you're being charged an annual fee for availing the facility, and whether the reward and cash backs will be beneficial for you.

Components that you must look into before getting a business card:

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) –This is the annual percentage of interest that you will be paying on the outstanding amount on your credit card when stretched beyond its prescribed time of payment. Nominal APR is the simple interest rate for a year, while effective APR is the fee and compounded interest calculated across the year. Some creditors will offer a 0% APR during the first six or twelve months of the ownership of the card depending on the plan, consumers must be careful of this because after the period is over, you will be charged.

Credit rating – Most cards are offered only if you meet a prescribed credit score, make sure that the card you're applying for falls in the bracket of your credit score, otherwise your credit check and application will just be in vain because the application will be summarily rejected.

Late fee – A late fee is a fee imposed when your payment on the credit card is received after the due date or grace period. Some creditors charge a late fee in direct proportion to the amount that is due, whereas some others will just charge a flat fee until the payment is made. Again, this is an important point to note, it's no fun watching your money being wasted away because you forgot to make a payment.

Annual fee – This is a flat fee that the creditors will charge you based on which card you opt for. Here, you have to make sure that the rewards that you plan to receive will be enough to offset the annual fee, otherwise the entire point of a reward card is lost. Most standard cards have no annual fee, there are in fact even some reward cards which are offered without an annual fee. Of course, the higher the annual fee, the greater the privileges there usually are associated with the card.

Schumer Box – The Schumer box is a summary of the costs of a credit card. Creditors are bound by legislation to provide the terms of the credit card in the promotional material. Although a glance at the points provided above will give you a rough estimate of the cost of ownership of the card, for an exact estimate – Schumer box comes with information about the financial calculation methods, over and above the standard information like different APRs, grace period, balance transfers, late payment, exceeding credit limit fee, cash advances at all.

A few questions to ask yourself before applying:

  • Should I go for a co-branded card or a generic one?
  • What is the annual fee on the card?
  • Do I really travel enough to put the card to good use?
  • Does the card offer the privileges that I'm looking for and will be using?
