If you are thinking of starting a small business, here is a small piece of information that will hopefully save you a lot of heartache – there are absolutely no guarantees in business. If you think that your business growth will be a direct reflection of your business plan without and kinds of ups and downs and unforeseen hiccups, you should brace yourself to be disappointed. Even so, it is possible to improve your chances of being successful with good planning, insight and preparation. The best place to start is by analyzing your strengths and weaknesses as a potential small business owner.

For starters, consider the following questions:

Do you have initiative? The journey of starting and growing a business does not always have fellow travelers. You will be responsible to turn your ideas into products, make the most optimal use of your time and do the legwork yourself in the beginning

This is a brief overview of what a business plan should consist of without going into specific details like how the formatting should be and components like Table of Contents and Appendix are assumed by default. If you need a template to base your business plan on, there are many available free of cost on the internet. There are also many softwares available that assist you in making a business plan. The process just got simpler.

Are you fickle-minded? As a business owner, you will have to make difficult decisions on an everyday basis. Often while pressed for time and under pressure. These are decisions that will affect the near and far term prospects of your business.

How comfortable are you with people? Business owners need to constantly meet and network with people. Vendors, clients, employees, investors and partners are just some of the people you will have to deal with day in and day out apart from professionals like lawyers, consultants and accountants. Do you think you would be able to manage that?

Do you have good research and organizational skills? Bad planning is often the reason why most start-ups don’t seem to succeed as they intended to. Good organization of financials, inventory, schedules and production coupled with regular audits can help you avoid many mistakes.

Have you considered the impact on your personal relationships? The first few months, or even years of starting a business can be a rough time with respect to your family and personal relationships. You will find yourself with lesser time on your hands. Not only that, financial woes may also hit unexpectedly putting sudden strain on relationships.

How motivated are you? The every doldrums of trying to get a new business up on its feet can drain you out physically and emotionally. The only way to counter this is to make sure that your motivation levels are high enough to overcome these barriers. You must be committed to your cause. As Einstein said, “he who has a why to live can bear almost any how”.

These are less qualities, but more things to consider before you set out on your entrepreneurial journey. The qualities that are commonly found in successful entrepreneurs are – leadership skills, confidence, energy, creativity, organization skills, competitive spirit, risk taking capability. You should not give your hopes down if you don’t seem to fair well on one or more of these accounts. If you have the desire to make it work and the grit to see it through, you can.
